Cheryl Foley named new director of Camp Sunrise

Columbus-Cheryl Foley has been our AIDS community, Camp Sunrise

appointed as the new executive director of Camp Sunrise, an Ohio non-profit that conducts programming for youth whose lives have been impacted by HIV or AIDS. Foley was selected by the board of directors on February 2 after an extensive and thorough executive search process.

Foley becomes the executive director after years of service as not only a volunteer who has acted as the camp nursing director for the past 15 years, but also a former board member. She will also continue in her role as vice president and director of medical writing for GSW Worldwide.

"As a non-profit serving the youth of

requires a combination of vision, compassion and management expertise in its leader," said Thomas Tootle, the organization's board president. "Cheryl has just this combination. Her wealth of knowledge in this area, track record of management success and commitment to the Camp Sunrise program will be svalued assets in our ongoing efforts to build and improve upon this highly successful program."

"Camp Sunrise not only provides Ohio children impacted by HIV/AIDS with an amazing summer camp experience, it has transformed many at-risk youth into exceptional young adults," said Foley. "I am excited to take on this

new opportunity and continue working with this organization which has long been a passion of mine."

Foley received her BSN from Ohio State University in 2002. She is a lifelong resident of Franklin County.

Camp Sunrise, founded in 1994, is a fun-filled summer camp experience free from the isolation so often associated with the AIDS epidemic. It is also a support for Ohio children and families year round with programs that allow campers and their families to interact on a more regular basis throughout the

year.

The Camp program is open to children ages 6-17 throughout the state of Ohio who are impacted by HIV/AIDS.

The week at camp not only offers usual camp activities such as canoeing, hiking, and swimming, but it also offers special activities each year. Some of the most popular activities have been the talent shows, carnivals, and dances.

The Sundog program is for campers ages 15-17. This part of Camp Sunrise is designed specifically to develop confidence, self-esteem, and coping skills for older campers who would like more leadership and responsibility. The participants spend the week learning more about their peers and themselves. The teens have a weekend retreat prior to camp to help develop a stronger bond before working and playing together at camp.
